Standard Poodles -Our Goals

Cody visiting Mackenzie's Kindy

We have a passion for poodles of all sizes but we concentrate on the standard variety. Written below is our thoughts and beliefs on breeding and exhibiting standard poodles.

While we have been involved with the standard poodle breed for 20 years, we waited until we had gained sufficient breed knowledge before we started breeding. We bred our first litter in 1999.

We try to be objective with our dogs in our endeavour to breed quality standard poodles. We separate our love for each individual poodle from our honest evaluation of that dog's good and bad points. In the eyes of its owner, virtually every dog is the best in the world, and as a breeder you must look beyond your love of your standard poodle if you wish to have a successful breeding programme.

Establishing a family of poodles is a very slow business when you can only keep a small number of dogs and we have also had the additional problem that our foundation bitch, GR Ch Aultone Breathtaking I Am (Blade) produced mainly male offspring. We are lucky that we are able to use males from each of our litters but have only been able to breed from one female, CH Avonti White Lies (Stella) to carry on our line.

Our lines incorporate bloodlines from the top kennels in Australia, as well as Sweden, England and America.

We have been very fortunate with being able to export our lovely white boy to Sweden, Swd/Fin/Dan/Nord Ch Avonti Alluring Whipser who then sired our Top Winning Black Dog Ch ArtAttack Who's That Tasty Teaser, and our newest import Racketeer Whispering Angel.

Angel(sired by Swd/Fin/Dan/Nord Avonti Alluring Whisper) and Amali, (sired by Ch ArtAttack Who's That Tasty Teaser) have been added to our kennel as brood bitches.

Angel has just produced one white male puppy via a frozen semen AI to Ch Prestige I'll Do Anything, and Amail is had a litter due May 25 to the same sire.

We will only breed to preserve the best qualities of the standard poodle. Breeding just because you have orders for puppies is not a justification to produce a litter.

Our main goal is to breed happy, healthy, sound, well adjusted poodles , with correct type and temperament with style and attitude.

Our goal is to produce poodles suitable for conformation, agility, obedience and family companions.

Our goal is to try and ensure that our puppies and older poodles are placed in loving, caring and appropriate homes. Our goal is to work towards the eradication of health problems, using the testing means available to us and to be honest and forthcoming with our fellow breeders.

We strongly belive in testing our dogs before we breed. Up until 2005, our dogs were tested for hips, eyes and skin. On the advice of our veterinarian we will no longer test for SA, until a DNA test is developed. For our future litters we will also be testing our bitches for vWD and thyroid. We follow the AVA guidelines and will not breed dogs with incompatiable or below the breed average hipscores.

It is pointless to test and then ignore the results or the ramifications from breeding to less suitable animals healthwise just because it is the flavour of the month, or handy to use.

As breeders we are the guardians of the breed. We must keep the gene pool as diverse as possible by incorporating new lines and not just using the popular stud dogs available at the time. We are always looking for new blood to incorporate into our family of poodles.

We spend a lot of time and effort in researching the breed. As poodle fanciers we believe it is our duty to be honest with our fellow breeders. Open conversation with fellow breeders will be a benefit to the breed as a whole. We will ALL encounter some sort of problem in our lines and by being open and forthright it may help another breeder avoid unwanted traits.

Our goal is striving to breed a better poodle in each litter we produce but in order to breed a better poodle you must have a vision of what your ideal poodle is like. While we all have the breed standard to follow it is lacking in detail and open to personal interpretation.

Our Blue Print for the Standard Poodle

Our vision of the ideal poodle would include the following points.

Our ideal poodle has a fantastic temperament, is intelligent, shows curiosity, is sensitive, is extremely trainable, is distrustful of strangers, haughty, devoted and protective to his owner, a friend of the children, adaptable, takes pride in his appearance, thinks like a person and has a sense of humour. Our ideal poodle is extremely versatile and excels in any challenge offered to him.

Our ideal poodle must have correct structure, allowing him to move correctly, which then reduces wear and tear on his joints. Our ideal poodle moves in perfect rhythm with a slight spring in his step, with plenty of reach and drive. His head and tail are carried high. Our ideal poodle loves the water and can swim.

Our ideal poodle must have poodle type. A squarely built, balanced, well proportioned, short backed dog with a harsh, curly weatherproof coat. A long refined head, with a moderately chieselled and sculpted foreface, wicked expression, definite chin, large white teeth with full dentition, dark almond shaped eye, level planes, small well cushioned oval shaped feet, rather high set straight tail, carries himself proudly .

Our ideal poodle is medium sized, moderately angulated, bodied dog with spring of rib. Our ideal poodle has a well muscled second thigh.

Our ideal poodle is healthy, active and has a lifespan of 14 - 16 years.

Kindest Regards

Jaimee and Angela
